In response to requests from Lutherans in America for a unifying leader, in 1742 Henry Melchior Muhlenberg was sent from Halle (Jasper & Cuming 1990, p. 298). His work with a number of local congregations, many of which were in Pennsylvania, led to the adoption of a common liturgy by the first North American Lutheran Synod in Philadelphia in 1748.
Though there are some suggestions that the liturgy depended on the Lutheran liturgy in use in London, Jasper and Cuming see a much greater influence of a variety of church orders in use (Jasper & Cuming 1990, p. 298). "This liturgy was never printed. Each minister was responsible for making his own manuscript copy" (Jasper & Cuming 1990, p. 298). The text, with revisions, was printed in 1786 (Jasper & Cuming 1990, p. 299). Jasper and Cuming use the text from two remaining manuscripts of the 1748 version.
After a brief bibliography (Jasper & Cuming 1990, p. 299), Jasper and Cuming provide an English translation of the eucharistic portions of the liturgy.
