Schaff, Philip. "The Title." The Oldest Church Manual Called the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged. New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1886, 14-16.
Schaff considers the title of the Didache and concludes that it derived from Acts 2:42 and that the reference to apostolic teaching is to its content, not to the particular authorship by the twelve apostles (Schaff 1886, 15). In this regard, Schaff treats the text charitably. It does not have some of the fanciful features associated with apostles by other anonymous authors in antiquity. Here, the teaching seems to correspond to apostolic doctrine. He sees the specification "to the Gentiles" as applying particularly to the first six chapters, while the rest is for those who are already converted to Christianity (Schaff 1886, 16).
