Bouyer states as his purpose in this book "to try step by step to follow the progressive unfolding of the Christian eucharist" (Bouyer 1968, p. 1). Specifically, he focuses directly on the anaphora of the eucharist (Bouyer 1968, p. 2), which he considers to be the core of worship. Throughout the study, he intends to emphasize the wonder which should accompany reflection on the divine work and presence.
Study of Apostolic Constitutions book 8 has motivated Bouyer and others to seek out the center of early Christian thought and to explore the development of the eucharist (Bouyer 1968, pp. 3-4) The depth of theology to be found is not only a motivation but also a delight. For this reason, Bouyer urges finding the theology of the eucharist as something which emerges from the liturgy rather than imposing a theoretical theology upon the liturgy from outside (Bouyer 1968, p. 5). Bouyer briefly describes a number of theological ideas he considers to be unfairly imposed onto important texts and liturgical elements, such as the notion of the precise moment at which consecration takes place. Bouyer does consider the 16th century Reformation to have isolated the words of institution from the greater concepts of the eucharist (Bouyer 1968, p. 9), something I consider the radical Reformation to have done, but not the Lutheran Reformation. Bouyer disagrees, taking the Lutherans to have stripped away the centrality of the anaphora.
