Questions for Study and Discussion:
In verses 1-4, does Jesus condemn observational science? Why or why not?
In verses 5-12, and in other places in the Bible, false teaching, bad ideas, and sin are compared to yeast or leaven. Why is this an appropriate metaphor?
Verses 13-20 are usually considered a very important passage. Ask the questions of yourself and your culture. Who do people in your culture think Jesus might be? Who do you think he is? Defend your answers.
In verses 21-28, Jesus speaks of his upcoming death again. Why is this such a difficult concept for the disciples, as shown by Peter? How does he expect us to act in light of his death and resurrection?
