Keep working on learning where to look for different things in Matthew's Gospel. In chapter nine we saw several healings, including a young girl and an old lady who interrupts the visit to the young girl.

In Matthew chapter 10, we move into the second of the five main discourses. The first one, referred to as the sermon on the mount, was in chapters 5-7 This one, roughly corresponding to chapter 10, is normally referred to as the commissioning of the twelve apostles. As always in Matthew, the discourse is a lengthy series of statements by Jesus which come after a number of actions of Jesus that serve to set the scene for the discourse.
In Matthew 10, the twelve disciples are given power and authority for a task. What made the disciples the right people for the task? Consider the doctrine of vocation. What does the Lord use you to do?
Jesus' commission to his disciples includes healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing leprosy, and driving out demons. What do the twelve apostles actually do? How is it shown?
How are the apostles to act when they enter a home? Discuss the idea of placing peace upon a place, or revoking the peace as we see in Matthew 10:13.
Based on Matthew 10, is the life of a Christian leader expected to be easy? Why or why not? What kind of preparations would you advise the Christian leader to make?
What is the Christian response to persecution? Why?
Describe the way you have been received by Jesus and his people. Is this like the way the rest of the world receives you? Explain your answer.
