From the Wittenberg Door News Desk 5/22/26
Congratulations to graduates and those who are wrapping up studies of one kind or another! We always miss you when you leave, but you're surely going to something good.
During the summer, Wittenberg Door Campus Ministry doesn't have as many regularly scheduled events. However, last summer we had a number of very successful movie/conversation evenings. We watch films that are significant from a cultural or historical standpoint, then spend some time discussing how to deal with the situations from a biblical standpoint. That doesn't sound as interesting as it really is. Let's get an example. One of the films we watched, a major release some years ago, was about a community that had retreated from the modern world to set up a life that would not have the troubles of our modern world. The troubles found them anyway. From a biblical standpoint, we can think about the problem of evil and what a Christian response to that evil might be.
Unlike our school-year activities, in these movie nights, we are not attempting to make them friendly for children. The themes may be tense, as well as difficult to discuss.

Sunday, May 31, 4:00 pm Forum 8 Theater in Columbia - Tickets are $11.00.
The first one is actually in a theater. Hillsdale College, a small but robust college in Michigan, has released a feature-length film called Revolutionary America, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States' Declaration of Independence. On the film's website there's also a substantial academic study guide with the source documents used in tracing the way the nation's founders decided it was time to declare independence. We can think about what a nation is for, how it can be true to its purposes, and when it might be time to take drastic action.
Friday, June 19th, 7:00 pm, Spotts' House
The second one will be at our home, like the dinner and conversation evenings during the school year. However, we'll just have some snack-type treats to share and encourage people to bring things as well. At this one, we'll explore three different thought-provoking selections, about a half hour each, from the mid-1960s. Themes such as the purpose of humanity, what to do with uncertainty, and how to determine what really matters will emerge.
Friday, July 24th, 7:00 pm, Spotts' House
This one is farther out, and we haven't made a firm decision what to show. It will probably be a feature-length film.
Dinner and Conversation Evenings will probably resume every other week beginning Friday, August 21.
