John 02 Questions for Reflection and Discussion

In this painting of Jesus visiting the wedding at Cana at Galilee, the artist has used Italian architecture and clothing for the people, who also appear as Italians from the Renaissance period. The pots are being filled with water and Jesus, though he is being honored by some, is mostly a background figure. It is not his time of prominence. Surprisingly enough, the painting is by Julius Schnoor von Carolsfeld, who painted it in 1819. It is a large work, almost eight feet in width, on canvas. The painting is currently located at the Hamburger Kunsthalle.

John 02 Questions for Reflection and Discussion

Notice in the Bible we refer to the following:
Book - John (there are many different "books" in the one book of the Bible),
Chapter - Normally found as a big numeric heading. John has 21 chapters,
Verse - a segment usually about a sentence long.
The chapter and verse markings were added to the text as a handy index about 800 years ago. They are the same in virtually every different translation.

Here's a link to John chapter 2. You can also compare the text in several different languages and translations.

If you want a copy of John's Gospel in print, we're happy to meet you around the Mizzou campus and put one into your hand!

1. In the first 12 verses Jesus and his disciples are at a wedding. Jesus works a miracle to provide for the guests. What questions could you ask from the text when you consider the idea of jars of water for purification and Jesus' creation of wine?

2. Verses 13-17 speak of Jesus chasing some people out of the temple. What is at the heart of his action?

3. When Jesus removes the people and livestock from the temple, he does not harm the people or the livestock. What does this suggest to you?

4. In verses 8-22 John foreshadows something to come later in the Gospel account. At this point, what does Jesus seem to be suggesting?

5. In verses 23-25, even though many people were believing in Jesus, why would he not entrust himself to them? What does this lead us to think about the nature of humans?

Be sure to ask your questions and share your ideas in the comments for this post!
