Schaff, Philip. History of the Christian Church (The Complete Eight Volumes in One). Amazon Kindle Edition, 2014.
Volume 2, Ante-Nicene Christianity A.D. 100-325, “Chapter 13. Ecclesiastical Literature of the Ante-Nicene Age, and Biographical Sketches of the Church Fathers.” sec. 159-204.
§ 159. Literature.
Schaff begins his discussion of the churchly literature of the ante-Nicene period with an annotated bibliography. Of special note, he considers the Migne collection “the cheapest and most complete patristic library, but carelessly edited, and often inaccurate” (Schaff 2014, Loc. 20242). Schaff’s evaluations of the various works are valuable as he compares different editions of the same work and also identifies which authors are best treated in which collections. He also identifies the theological orientation of polemical works. As a section of bibliography, this portion of Schaff’s text does not address any of the early Christian literature itself.
