Scholarly Reflections
Koukl, Gregory. (2019). "Chapter Nineteen: More Sweat, Less Blood." In Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions (updated and expanded). (pp. 255-267). Grand Rapids: Zondervan.
Koukl briefly reviews his original statements of an intention to help navigate through conversations of difficult topics. He does, however, caution his reader that practice, like physical training, can be a lot of work (Koukl 2019, p. 256).
Koukl makes eight specific recommendations. He describes them in some detail (Koukl 2019, pp. 256-258), but I will simply provide a list.
1) Be ready.
2) Keep it simple.
3) Avoid religious language and spiritual pretense.
4) Focus on the truth of Christianity, not merely its personal benefits.
5) Give reasons.
6) Stay calm.
7) If they want to go, let them leave.
8) Don't let them leave empty-handed.
Koukl further suggests making deliberate attempts to build relationships with Chrsitians who are similarly interested in exploring the Christian faith (Koukl 2019, p. 259). Growing through regular discussion and interaction may also influence people who at first are not as connected (Koukl 2019, p. 260).
Remaining open to interactions with detractors can be of great value. Hostile witnesses are not the enemy. Rather, they provide an opportunity to enter into significant dialog (Koukl 2019, p. 261). Koukl illustrates that these encounters may or may not turn out as we hope. Yet we can always learn from the discussions we enter (Koukl 2019, p. 263). There is ultimately no reason to retreat and concede to hostile witnesses, especially when bringing them a message which welcomes them to eternal life and hope (Koukl 2019, p. 264). When we are rejected, we can remember that Jesus also was rejected (Koukl 2019, p. 265).
