Matthew 4:1-11 - Lectionary for Lent 1A

Many churches throughout the world use a Bible reading schedule called a "lectionary." It's just a fancy word meaning "selected readings." Posts like this reflect on the readings for an upcoming Sunday or other Church holiday, as found in the three-year lectionary.

In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness. It doesn’t take much imagination to see how strong the temptation would be. He had been fasting for 40 days and nights. By the time he becme hungry, his body was urgently telling him that, unless fed very soon, he would die. What is the first temptation? Food. Yet the temptation is more than just a temptation to eat. That’s trivial. Satan is also implying that it would be a good idea for Jesus to make food for the whole world, for always, from rocks, something which even the poorest parts of the world possess in abundance. Likewise, in the second temptation,  wouldn’t it be nice, not only for Jesus to live on, unharmed, no matter what he does, but to share that with the whole world? And in the third temptation, Satan promises Jesus the whole world in exchange for worship.

In all three temptations, Jesus uses the Scripture to set the record straight. It is God’s word, identified elsewhere as Jesus himself, which brings life. It isn’t all about food. Food will keep you for a while. God’s Word will keep you forever. As to eternal life and health, again it is a matter of trust in God, not a matter of doing something rash. Satan comes to kill. Jesus comes to give life. Those who die in Christ are not eternally dead. It is not a matter of throwing ourselves off the temple or doing some other act to test God. No, he has already made us secure. The kingdoms of this world are Jesus’ already. He bows to nobody. If he were to bow down to worship Satan he would cease to be the true God.

It is as Jesus overcomes these  temptations that we can also see ourselves rescued through temptations. We likewise can hold to God’s word, trust that Jesus is the one who gives everlasting life, and realize that he is the true and living God who holds all creation in his mighty hand. This is life indeed.

Romans 5:12-19 - Lectionary for Lent 1A

In Romans 5 the apostle Paul draws a distinction between the one and the many. This was a typical distinction hotly debated within Greek philosophy even up to Aristotle’s time. What’s significant about the debate is exactly what a philosopher or logician would mean when referring to “many.” It is used as the opposite of either “one” or of “none.” At its core, the debates had been about whether there was one substance in the world or if there were many substances. “Many,” therefore, meant “all.”

When Paul makes his argument of sin and forgiveness, here’s what he is saying. Adam, the first Adam, died. In his death, all people died. Sin’s curse is upon all humans in every age. Jesus, the second Adam, lives. In his life, all people have access to life. Jesus’ forgiveness is for all humans in every age.

Why aren’t all saved? Christians confess that it is only as we believe Jesus that his life is appropriated for us. It doesn’t mean that his death was not sufficient for all the sins of the world. It means that his death is not applied to those who think they can work out their own salvation. Why are any saved? Jesus, the last Adam, has killed death. He has reversed what Adam did by sinning and bringing death upon the entire human race.

The question is not meant to apply to some theoretical other person. Paul’s argument is is meant to be applied to his readers, to the Christians in Rome, and, by extension, to the many who read this letter. The question, then, remains. Do we take the Scripture at its word which says Jesus died so all who believe could receive life? What hinders us from that belief? He is the sufficient savior.

Genesis 3:1-21 is one of the foundational texts for understanding life in our world. It lays out the fall into sin. It discusses, in a nutshell, all that is wrong to this day. Before the passage we see a world where there is nothing but peace and harmony. All creation has been made by God’s word. It has been proclaimed good. The world, and specifically the people, hear the voice of God and live in accord with it.

Once the serpent begins speaking, and the people begin listening, everything goes wrong. We observe that the woman attempts to go beyond God’s word in order to defend against the falsehood that the serpent gives her. She denies what God has revealed, substituting her own wisdom. By her own reason she does what is against God’s command and is toxic to all humanity. Rather than being the one who leads his family, his original role, the man bows to the wisdom of his wife even though it goes against God’s command.

The people have been told that when they disobey they will die. Death has entered into the world. It is not natural to creation. It is natural to fallen creation. As God speaks with the serpent, the woman, and the man, it is clear that the one who brought sin into the world will be condemned. The world will endure pain and disappointment, though it is still God’s good creation. Death will reign.

As we look around us we see that our world is a great place to be. It is full of amazing things. Yet we are surrounded by the effects of the fall. We endure pain. We eventually suffer death. The patterns of the world aren’t as predictable as we would think. Some who seem innocent suffer and die. Some who don’t seem innocent are thriving. It’s all topsy turvy.

At the same time, God gives a great promise. He does it when he clothes the man and woman. As he kills one or more animal in order to provide clothes of skin, the man and woman are confronted with the reality of death, something they have never seen. They know that it is their sin which brought death. And it is the death of another on their behalf which is able to cover their sin and guilt. Their attempt at covering their guilt was to no avail. God alone is able to cover the guilt of sin, because he is the one who defines sin.

In the New Testament, this death of the animals on behalf of the people is fulfilled. Jesus, one who is completely human but who has no sin, dies on behalf of the people of this fallen world. It is his death which can cover our sin, as we trust in him. This is the hope of the world.

So we are given in Genesis 3 a clear description of all the root problems of the world and the redemption of the world. A very powerful passage indeed.

Psalm 32:1-7 - Lectionary for Lent 1A

Our Psalm for this week points to the great mercy and grace of God. The person who trusts in the Lord, who acknowledges his sin, who seeks forgiveness, that person is perfectly safe in Christ. The New Testament clearly describes the believer in Jesus as being covered by his mercy. The death of Jesus rescues the Christian from eternal death.

Is this a universalist statement? Does Psalm 32 say that everyone is just fine? Not in any way. When we do not acknowledge our sin before God we are held guilty of it. We find the weight of sin will drag us down. It will not let us thrive. Those who do not approach God as repentant sinners, seeking his forgiveness, get to bear their sin on their own. This is a dreadful truth.

What hope is there? The call of the Gospel goes out to everyone. If you have read this Psalm you have heard that the Lord graciously calls you to confess to God, to be forgiven, and to find that God is your great defender. What can stand in your way? Nothing should.

    About Throwing Inkwells

    When Martin Luther was dealing with struggles in his life he once saw what appeared to be an angelic being. Not trusting that he was going to be informed by someone other than the God revealed in Scripture, he took the appearance to be untrustworthy and hurled his inkwell at it. The chipped place in the plaster wall is still visible at the Wartburg Castle, though apparently the ink stain on the wall has been refreshed periodically by the caretaker.
