Schaff, Philip. "A Literary Sensation." The Oldest Church Manual Called the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged. New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1886, 10-12.
Schaff observes that the pubication of the Didache almost immediately became a literary sensation, particularly in the scholarly world. The text was published in December of 1883. In January of 1884 the publication was announced in "Allgemeine Zeitung" and, "a few days afterwards" Adolf Harnack published a German translation of chapters 7-16 (Schaff 1886, 10). Harnack's more complete volume emerged in June of 1884. At least two more scholarly editions of the Greek text with critical notes were published during 1884 (Schaff 1886, 11). English editions, with Greek texts, notes, and discussions, also appeared in 1884. The United States also saw editions as early as March of 1884 (Schaff 1886, 12). Schaff describes this flurry of activity as nothing less than sensational.
