§ 133. Hermogenes.
Schaff introduces his readers briefly to Hermogenes, who is commented on by both Tertullian and Hippolytus (Schaff 2014, Loc. 18590). Hermogenes was a dualist who considered the world to be created from an eternal matter, some of which resisted God so became evil. He was fairly orthodox in many ways, but did engage in speculation which went well beyond biblical ideas.
