Friday is for Rhetoric! An important part of the teacher’s work is to give meaningful review of student assignments. An important part of the work of a student is to analyze that review. Quintilian advises working together for improvement.
Quintilian, and J.S. Watson. Institutes of Oratory. Edited by Lee Honeycutt, 2010. Kindle Electronic Edition. Book II, Chapter 6.
Quintilian discusses the kind of help a pupil should have in composition. He begins by illustrating teachers who take student examples and without making explanation rework and expand them. Other teachers explain every step along the way. In Quintilian’s opinion either might work, but “it will be of greater service to point out the right way at first than to recall those who have gone astray from their errors” (Quintilian II.6.2). The overall role of the teacher is to prepare students to work on their own, a task comparable to a bird raising young (Quintilian II.6.7), training them to fly.
