Scholarly Notes
For week three -
Read Ephesians 2:1-10, preparing to discuss the Greek text.
I'll provide you with a copy of Ephesians 2:1-10 which is annotated appropriately for relatively inexperienced readers.
Read Winger pp. 278-308.
Read Thielman pp. 118-147.
Read Peterson pp. 88-106.
Some thought prompts:
1) Winger describes Ephesians 2:1-10 as a chiasm. Find the parallel portions. If this is chiasm, what becomes the focus of the passage?
2) Discuss and describe Paul's use of αἰῶν in this passage. How might this inform the way we interact with our majority culture in this time?
3) Ephesians 2:8 has a text critical issue, as we find some manuscripts have a definite article before the word “faith.” What is the difference in usage between faith with the article and faith without the article? Compare Ephesians 3:17; 4:5; 4:13; 6:16; and 6:23
4) Whose good works are referred to in Ephesians 2:10?
