The earliest Christians followed a Jewish tradition of pausing to pray, preferably together, first thing in the morning, about mid morning, at noon, about mid afternoon, and in the evening. “Just a Note” posts are brief observations made from Scripture readings not related to a lectionary. If I have one to post, it normally appears about 9:00 in the morning, at “the hour of prayer.”
What is Jesus’ role in judgment? In John 12:44-50 he says that he is not here to judge. He is not the one who condemns. This should make us breathe a deep sigh of relief. It is all Gospel. Jesus is the light of the world and he has come for all who believe. This is great news.
Then again, Jesus says the people who do not believe on him are condemned. The difference is that he is not the one condemning them. Where does this condemnation come from? It comes from God’s Word which has been revealed in many ways, by many people, for many generations. The Old Testament points to Jesus, the one to come, the light of the world.
Thus the message becomes once again a warning. Flee from the judgment to come. It is something which is easily found in Scripture. Turn to God the Son, seeking his mercy. He came to be merciful. Be a recipient of the Gospel promises, not someone who merely hears and turns away.
