What is the role of the teacher? Is it simply to impart information? Quintilian thinks not.
Quintilian, and J.S. Watson. Institutes of Oratory. Edited by Lee Honeycutt, 2010. Kindle Electronic Edition. Book II, Chapter 9.
Quintilian uses this brief chapter to exhort students to honor and love their tutors, not just their studies. The tutor is similar to a parent, in terms of the mind, rather than the body (Quintilian II.9.1). A genuine care for the instructor will create the positive attitude needed to accept correction and to strive for excellence (Quintilian II.9.2).
